In 1995, I conceived of a convergence between e-mail, chat rooms, instant messaging, and newsgroups. I created a design and prototype for a system to manage online and offline conversations, among individuals and groups.

Early in the development of the modem, before there were “groups” or “blogs”, there were bulletin boards. I wrote Bulletin Board System software that ran out of my bedroom — participants could dial in via a 300bits-per-second modem.
